I was a 19 year old college student at Northeastern University when my life was turned upside down by my psychiatrist. At the time, I was suffering from mild anxiety and I went to my psychiatrist for help. I found the psychiatrist from a list of medical doctors on my medical insurance plan. Initially he treated me for only mild anxiety, but then he decided to oversee my pain management as well. He ended up prescribing to me over 8,000 pills of highly addictive benzodiazepines and opiate pain killers over 2 ½ years. As a result of my psychiatrist’s copious prescriptions, I became seriously addicted to both controlled substances. My life spiraled downward and impacted my relationships with my family and friends, and my performance at school. I was hospitalized multiple times while in school for my drug use, and even tried to commit suicide. My life was like a rollercoaster ride, the more drugs I took, the more violent were the ups and downs that I experienced everyday. Eventually, my psychiatrist prescribed oxycodone to me, and that is when I crashed. I ended up in a lockdown psychiatric facility for a month and then I was confined to a half way house for four months. I underwent the 12 point alcoholics anonymous system of recovery which helped me overcome my drug addiction. While I like to think I’m doing much better today, I still live with the fear of drugs, and worry everyday that I will relapse. Just like Robbin Williams, I fight addiction and depression everyday.
