Grand Jury Indicts Contractor
A contractor has been indicted with manslaughter by a grand jury for the construction site crane collapse that killed six workers and one woman from Florida in the spring of 2008.
William Rapetti and his company, Rapetti Rigging Services Inc. were indicted by a grand jury on Friday January 9, 2009 on manslaughter. Rapetti’s company used worn, fraying safety straps on the crane that collapsed in the spring of 2008 that killed seven people in a Manhattan neighborhood. The court documents reveal that Rapetti was indicted on seven counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide as a result of the 19-story crane collapse on March 15, 2008. Aside from the seven people killed by the collapse, a townhouse was also leveled in the accident.
Most construction experts feel that eight protective slings should be used to help hold up a steel brace that connected the crane to a tower. The crew from Rapetti’s company used only four protective slings, causing the crane to collapse. The collapse killed six construction workers and one woman visiting the area from Florida for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend
