Doctors Remove Wrong Organ from Patient in Organ Removal Surgery, Surviving Family Members Initiate Medical Malpractice Litigation – New York City Medical Malpractice Victim’s Rights Explained

SurgeryError

The family of a man who underwent a procedure in which doctors removed the wrong organ from his body is accusing a hospital of egregious medical malpractice. According to national news reports, the family of William Bryan, a 70-year-old man originally from Alabama, is in the pre-filing process of a medical malpractice lawsuit against Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Walton County, Florida, for an extreme error that occurred during surgery on August 18 of this year. Bryan’s family alleges that Bryan was scheduled to have his spleen surgically removed, but instead, doctors mistakenly removed his liver. The extremely egregious error ultimately resulted in the death of Bryan. Investigations into the horrific case revealed that following the surgery, in which the liver and not the spleen was removed, a pathologist identified that what had been labeled “spleen” by Bryan’s doctors was actually liver tissue. An autopsy after Bryan’s death also revealed that Bryan’s liver was gone, but the spleen was still in his body, with a cyst attached to it. According to the lawyers who are representing Bryan’s family, the cyst on Bryan’s spleen should have been “very treatable”.

Beverly Bryan called the medical malpractice performed on her husband as “unnecessary and brutal”, and said of her late husband, “He brought joy to every life that he ever touched…He was the best husband and father that I could have possibly asked for… I’ll get through this and I’m going to be strong for him because he deserves justice for this.”
