Bronx Woman’s Fight after New York City Doctor, Hospital’s Medical Malpractice Sends Her into Coma Ends in $110Million Jury Award

The horrific case of a Bronx woman who was seriously injured at the hands of her doctors and treating hospital after seeking medical treatment for her asthma condition shows just how dangerous medical malpractice in New York City can be, and the fact that victims of medical malpractice in New York City can get justice in their cases. According to news reports covering the 2019 jury verdict, Keimoneia Redish, a woman and mother of five children from the Bronx, New York, was awarded $110.6 million from a Bronx jury after her eight-week medical malpractice trial.

The horrific New York City medical malpractice case began back in 2010, when Redish sought treatment for her asthma at St. Barnabas Hospital. She had been seen at St. Barnabas for her asthma attacks in the past, being treated at the hospital 15-20 times before. However, this visit ended differently for Redish. Redish’s condition worsened at St. Barnabas, and, instead of transferring Redish to a nearby hospital where she could be treated by a heart-lung machine on site, doctors and residents decided to take matters into their own hands and decided to treat her only with what was available on site. The treatment that nearly killed Redish, included first giving her  “an array of asthma medications, including inhaled steroids and nebulizer treatments” which “failed to open up her bronchial tubes,” and ended up causing a build-up of carbon dioxide in her body; then giving her anesthesia, a “salvage therapy, when all else fails,” which caused Redish’s blood pressure to drop; and, next, as a result of the drop in her blood pressure, residents pumped Redish with fluids, which caused her to gain 80 pounds in less than six days. As a result of these procedures, Redish ultimately had a seizure. Reports note of her condition now, “Redish, who uses a wheelchair, has extensive motor deficits that physicians say are lifelong. She recovered amazingly from brain damage and being in a coma…but she lacks coordination of her arms and legs and of her speech. She also can’t dress herself or walk unassisted and she requires help for daily activities, from putting toothpaste on a brush and getting out of her wheelchair….”

On April 12, 2019, the Bronx jury that heard Redish’s case ultimately awarded her $60.7million for her past medical expenses and pain and suffering, and $49,940,958 for her future medical expenses, required “alterations” to her apartment for her condition, and costs of future car and future pain and suffering.
