Flushing Hospital Medical Center Medical Malpractice Lawyer

Flushing Hospital Medical Center was established in 1884 and it is considered the first hospital that served residents of Queens, New York. Queens is a borough in New York City, but it is considered to have the most ethnically diverse community in the entire country. Many of Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s services have been awarded and recognized by leading organizations in the healthcare industry. Despite these achievements, the facility is not flawless.

The hospital has been the subject of many medical malpractice claims for the negligent actions of its staff members or administrators. Our Flushing Hospital Medical Center medical malpractice lawyer outlines the safety risks at the facility and more below.

Complaints Against Flushing Hospital Medical Center

One of the most publicized lawsuits against Flushing Hospital was in 1995. The year before, Laura Gonzalez gave birth to a child who suffered severe brain damage, resulting in severe mental and physical impairments. The following year, both parents filed a lawsuit against Flushing Hospital Medical Center for failing to detect signs of fetal distress and failing to inform the mother of the distress at the time of delivery. The lawsuit claimed that if the doctor had performed a C-section, the injuries could have been prevented.

The lawsuit went on for over a decade before the hospital filed for bankruptcy in 2006. In 2007, the on-call doctor executed a $1 million confession of judgment. While admitting negligence in the case, he filed a motion for summary judgment and the case was transferred to a lower court, where it is still pending.

While the malpractice occurred nearly 30 years ago, medical malpractice still occurs at Flushing Hospital Medical Center today. The fact that the case has dragged on for the entirety of the baby’s childhood also shows how complex these cases can be, which is why it is so essential to work with an attorney when filing these types of claims.
