New York City Hospital Forks Out Close to $8 Million in Premature Birth Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

Quick was born prematurely back in 2003, at only 23 weeks old. The jury found that, among other errors, doctors failed to adequately treat Quick’s mother for a previous diagnosis of incompetent cervix, and failed to monitor her with ultrasounds every two weeks. As a result, Quick was born prematurely and spent the first 16 months of his life as a newborn in medical care, requiring a breathing tube until the age of 5 and a feeding tube until he was 9 years old. He now can walk, but he has problems with balance, and needs assistance with stairs. Quick’s mother, Theresa Wilson, is currently his caretaker.
Although a jury awarded Quick $80 million in the medical malpractice lawsuit, the case was settled for $7.75 million in cash to Quick, as well as the Medicaid lien. Quick now will be entered into the New York State Medical Indemnity Fund, where he will be able to get help with his healthcare costs and expenses.
