New York Medical Malpractice Victim Secures $120 million Jury Award Against Negligent Hospital in Medical Malpractice Case

HospitalRoom

When a patient arrives at a hospital, either by medics in an ambulance or by themselves in their own car, they likely believe that they will get the best care possible, and they must be in safe and good hands. However, unfortunately, the scary and shocking truth is that doctors make mistakes too, and they can be seriously catastrophic for the patients and the families of patients who fall victim to medical malpractice. Such was the case for a 41-year-old man from Elmsford, New York who visited Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York in 2018. According to news reports covering the tragic case, on the early morning of November 27, 2018, around 3:00 a.m., 41-year-old William R. Lee was transported by medics to Westchester Medical Center complaining of symptoms of a stroke. Apparently, no radiologists were available at the hospital that early morning, so on-call residents reviewed Mr. Lee’s CT scans. The on-call residents overlooked signs that indicated a stroke, but attending radiologists took a second look approximately three hours later and ordered a thrombectomy. Unfortunately, however, it was too late, and Lee had already suffered serious brain damage as a result of the delayed diagnosis and lack of treatment.

In 2020, Mr. Lee and his family brought a medical malpractice lawsuit to recover compensation for their injuries and losses related to the negligent medical treatment. Mr. Lee’s lawyers noted of his current state, “Unfortunately, he can no longer be a husband to his wife, a father to his children. It’s been a horrific situation for them.” The jury in Mr. Lee’s case took one day to consider the case and returned with a “historic” $120 million verdict. Mr. Lee now resides across the country on the west coast in California, at a memory care center.
