SUNY Downstate Medical Center Medical Malpractice Lawyer
SUNY Downstate Medical Center is a hospital and medical center located in Brooklyn, New York and serves the 2.5 million residents in the borough. The facility is the only state-run hospital in NYC. While patients can receive quality medical treatment at this hospital, it has also had some of the most egregious malpractice complaints lodged against it. Below, our SUNY Downstate Medical Center medical malpractice lawyer outlines what these are, and how you can claim the compensation you deserve.
Complaints From Former Surgeons
Two former surgeons who were fired by SUNY Downstate Medical Center have spoken out about the malpractice they witnessed during their time at the facility. The allegations they made against the facility are as follows:
- A lack of the required 24/7 care of patients in the cardiothoracic intensive care and cardiothoracic surgery units, which resulted in the death of three patients. One of these patients bled to death because the on-call doctor could not be reached.
- A lack of required 24/7 care for patients in the Pediatric Surgery Program,
- A high level of failed transplants, largely related to patients not receiving enough immunosuppression medication,
- Drug paraphernalia and alcohol bottles found in the office of a surgeon who had left the facility, and
- The same surgeon who left the facility was also left on the operating table and deteriorated so quickly, the two terminated surgeons had to rush back to save his life.
After the surgeons came forward to hospital administrators about their findings, they were both terminated. One of the doctor’s computers was seized and it contained findings about patient deaths, rejected transplants, and recommendations for improvement. When his computer was returned, the hard drive had been destroyed.
Other Types of Medical Malpractice
In addition to the above types of medical malpractice, there are others, as well. The most common of these are as follows:
- Misdiagnosis: A misdiagnosis occurs when a doctor diagnoses a patient with one condition when they are suffering from another.
- Delayed diagnosis: A delayed diagnosis occurs when a patient is diagnosed correctly with a condition but it happens later than it should have, resulting in further harm.
- Surgical errors: Leaving foreign objects in the body, anesthesia mistakes, operating on the wrong body part, and operating on the wrong patient are just a few common surgical errors.
- Medication errors: Administering the wrong dosage, giving medication to the wrong patient, and failing to prevent negative reactions are a few common types of medication errors.
- Birth injuries: Broken bones, cerebral palsy, nerve damage, and permanent brain damage are common types of birth injuries that constitute medical malpractice.
