Wyckoff Heights Medical Center Medical Malpractice Lawyer

Wyckoff Heights Medical Center is a teaching hospital located in Brooklyn, New York. The facility has 350 beds and is affiliated academically with the New York Medical College, the New York Presbyterian’s Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, and the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. The main goal of the facility is to train future doctors that are qualified personably and medically.

Safety Issues at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center

In the summer of 2011, Sonia Nateria went to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center to seek medical attention for abdominal pain. A second-year resident walked her to and from the examination room. Believing that she was suffering from an ectopic pregnancy, the resident left her to look for additional help. While walking with the resident, Nateria complained of dizziness. Once she was left alone, Natera became unconscious and fell. The fall caused Nateria serious injuries to her neck and elbow, which required surgery to repair.

Nateria filed a claim against the hospital, but the defense attorneys argued that her vital signs were normal and so, the only reason she fainted was due to vasovagal syncope, which is a condition in which the body is triggered by certain factors such as the sight of blood, and causes a fainting episode.

The jury found that the facility was not negligent when they allowed Sonia to walk. However, they did find that the facility was negligent by allowing her to stand unattended when she complained of dizziness. Ultimately, Nateria was awarded $1.2 million in damages.

Sadly, Nateria’s case is not the only one that indicates medical malpractice at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. In 2012, the facility was ranked worse than average in the New York City Area for patient safety by Consumer Reports.

Common Types of Medical Malpractice

Wyckoff Heights has acquired its poor ranking due to several types of medical malpractice. Any time a medical provider is negligent, it can be considered malpractice but there are some types that are more common than others. These include:

  • Lack of coordination in care,
  • Misdiagnosis,
  • Unnecessary procedures being performed and unnecessary tests being conducted,
  • Medical staff fail to take your symptoms seriously,
  • Defective or malfunctioning medical devices,
  • Lack of infection control that results in hospital-acquired infections,
  • Medication errors, such as the wrong prescription being prescribed or the right medication with an inaccurate dosage, and
  • Premature discharges, which results in injury.
